Free Virtual Resources during COVID-19 Stay-At-Home Directives

This post has a list of free resources for streaming, education, virtual tours, audio, reading, and health and wellness to help you during stay-at-home directives.




Streaming

Kanopy is a streaming service that has thousands of films for free. You just need a university ID or a library card to create an account and start streaming.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Live Streaming features relaxing videos of a kelp forest, jellyfish, playful otters and more!

San Diego Zoo Live Streaming shows you webcam videos of baboons, pandas, polar bears and other creatures to brighten up your day!

Hoopla lets you borrow movies for a 7-day period. All you need to create an account is a library card.

The Metropolitan Opera is streaming Live in HD presentations of their productions for free every night. Each performance screening is available for 20 hours.

SlingTV, a streaming service owned by Dish Network is making some of its selections free.


PBS offers free online programming and news PBS also has PBS LearningMedia which offers education videos differentiated by grade and subject.


Tennessee Aquarium has live streams of its residents and whales with accompanying activities and printable worksheets for children.



Educational

Smithsonian At-Home Activities features educational activities for preschool through middle school children.

NASA has a lot of educational activities to keep you entertained and NASA TV has documentaries for you to watch.

Brain Fuse offers on-demand, engaging e-learning for all ages and levels. Kids can get one-on-one homework help and tutoring from 1 to 10 pm every day. Other resources for school and career are available at all hours.

Class Central offers 495 free online Ivy league courses on humanities, computer science, business, engineering, mathematics and more!

Coursera offers over 3,000 courses from over 190 leading universities and companies. Best part? You can join for free!

Age of Learning is offering free at-home access to ABCmouse, a learning resource for ages 2 to 8.

Edhesive Amazon Future Engineer intended for learners in grades 6 through 12, the free courses focus on computer science education with materials accessible to both teachers and parents.

Achieve3000 Literacy offers free differentiated literacy courses for grades 2 to 12 for students reading below, at, and above their grade level. For students without internet access or a device, Achieve300 offers printable reading packets.


Reading Eggs is offering free 30-day access to their multi-award winning online reading program for kids age 3 to 13.


Codecademy is giving students access to Codecademy Pro for free to access thousands of hours of courses and projects to learn programming and data science.


Scholastic launched a free online learning hub for students in pre-kindergarten to grade 9, no sign-up required.


Critical Thinking offers free printable activities, interactive games and several free quizzes.


KneeBouncers is an online learning and entertainment platform that offers games, videos, and other challenges for toddlers and preschoolers. They are currently offering free access to the ad-free version of their learning platform.


Canva For Education is a dedicated registration service part of the Canva platform where students can create presentations, infographics, websites, reports, worksheets, posters, flyers and signage for free.


Actively Learn is an online curriculum platform for middle school and high school students that features ELA, social science and science assignments. All premium features are offered for free for the rest of the summer.


EdHelper is publishing free daily math and writing workbooks for elementary students.


Exploratorium is an online learning toolbox that features free science activities and materials that address public health topics around COVID-19 in addition to general science support activities and materials. The Exploratorium science activity webpage has 285 teacher-tested science activities that focus on chemistry, physics, astronomy, biology, visual perception, environmental science and more.



Audio

LA Country Library Audiobooks – The Los Angeles County Library has partnered with three services: Hoopla, OverDrive and RBdigital to provide anyone with a library card access to free audiobooks. The best part is that titles automatically expire so you do not need to worry about overdue fees!


Audible Stories offers free access to titles across 6 different languages to stream on desktop, laptop, phone or tablet. Titles range from stories appropriate for little listeners to teens.


Reading

LA County Library eBooks – The Los Angeles County Library partnership with Hoopla, OverDrive and Biblioboard provides library cardholders with access to ebooks that can be read through ios or android apps associated with the services or with a Kindle or Nook.

LA County Library Digital Magazines browse and read magazines with your library card on RBDigital available for Android and iOS.


Scribd is offering a free 30-day trial ebooks, audiobooks, and magazine online.


Amazon's KindleUnlimited is free for two-months to non-existing subscribers. You can access over a million books and magazines through the app.


Health and Wellness

Fitness Blender has 592 fitness videos for you to work out to that include yoga, bodyweight, and exercises that require basic equipment like dumbbells and kettlebells. You can filter the videos by desired calorie burn, intensity, training type, and equipment.


Global Tele-therapy is providing free half-hour online support sessions to students through June. The sessions range in formats based on age and focus on keeping students calm and engaged during stay-at-home directives.


Grab-n-Go meal sites across Los Angeles and Orange County are giving free meals to students 18 and younger who are present to receive them.


CORE Power Yoga has 16 hour-long yoga classes and four guided meditation videos available on their website.


Planet Fitness has a free daily class at 7 p.m. ET on its Facebook Live page.


Daily Burn Fitness has a 60-day trial membership to access a variety of workouts tailored to your fitness level, goals and preferences.


Gold's Gym is offering free on-demand and live video workouts as well as free access to the Gold's Amp Digital Personal Trainer app until May 31st.


Headspace guided meditation has free meditations, sleep and movement exercises on its app in the "Weathering the Storm" collection.


Calm Meditation has free access to videos, journals, calendars and audio guided meditations on their site available in English, German, French, Spanish, Korean and Portuguese.


Simple Habit is offering free premium membership to those financially impacted by COVID-19. Those who qualify need only email help [at] simplehabit.com and note that they’re in a precarious financial position due to the pandemic. Access includes free meditation collections through the end of April. However, you may still access free curated-meditations at on this Simple Habit free meditation webpage.


Shine Text has created a dedicated website with free resources to help you maintain mental wellness during these uncertain times. Resources include articles, meditations, daily mantras and an "ask an expert" where a mental health expert can address your mental health questions.


7Cups provides free 24/7 emotional support and affordable confidential online therapy & counseling with a licensed therapist for adults and teens.


Nike Training Club Premium is providing free access to class-style workouts, programs, and expert tips on nutrition sleep, and more to subscribers until further notice.




Virtual Tours

Kenaj Fjords Virtual Tour explores glaciers, fjords, and icebergs located in the Alaskan wilderness. Descend into an icy crevasse, kayak through majestic icebergs, and even see how a glacier melts and the effects that climate change has on this frozen terrain.

Hawaii Volcanos Virtual Tour explore the Nahuku Lava Tube, which is a cave formed by flowing lava, which can drain lava from a volcano during an eruption. On the tour, you can also enjoy the stunning view from the volcanic coastal cliffs, “fly” over an active volcano, and see the effects of an eruption from 1959.
