Maladaptive Responses to Negative Environments and How to Combat Them

Stress levels, sleep, routine and social activity are critical to mental well-being and stability; without adequate regulation of these determinants, mental health and physical health may be negatively impacted including cardiovascular health, mood disorders and substance abuse. This workshop introduced participants to techniques and practices that help regulate these important determinants of mental well-being through hands-on practice. Participants received handouts that define these factors and describe the methods used to mitigate or stop maladaptive behaviors as well as a mental health fact sheet describing the prevalence of mental illness in the United States. This workshop also emphasized the importance of peer support groups in preventing isolation, which affects the successful management of all other factors concerning mental wellness.
